Toen de Duitsers zich terugtrokken uit Finland pasten ze de tactiek van de verschroeide aarde toe, waarbij ook heel Rovaniemi met de grond gelijk werd gemaakt. De waanzin van de oorlog.

In het Arcticum (museum) is een expositie gewijd aan deze periode. Daarin wordt onder meer geattendeerd op de song van John Lennon; ‘Imagine’

Prachtig museum, het Acticum. Exposities over het leven in Lapland, de ecologie van Noordelijke streken en poolgebied, en over de ingrijpende gevolgen van klimaatverandering ook hier.

Na het Arcticum namen we een bus richting Santa Claus Village, de woonplaats van de Kerstman (hoewel die ook op de Noordpool schijnt te wonen, maar misschien is hij verhuisd omdat het poolijs smelt).

Daar stonden we dan, bij de poolcirkel (die hier als een witte streep over de grond getrokken is). Dit is dus een befaamde tourist trap. Ik (Peter) was hier al eerder, in 1994, en de zaken gingen kennelijk goed, want het complex is behoorlijk uitgebreid en verder gecommercialiseerd sinds die tijd.

Om bewijsmateriaal (zowel voor onze aanwezigheid alswel voor het bestaan van de Kerstman) te vergaren hebben we een paar prijzige ansichtkaarten laten maken van onze audiëntie bij Santa Claus, die we vervolgens aan de kleinkinderen hebben gestuurd vanuit het enige echte Santa Claus Postkantoor.

Verder hebben we wat informatie gezocht en gevonden voor het vervolg van de reis. Een welbestede dag dus.

Zoals je aan de schaduwen kunt zien (foto genomen om een uur of half drie ‘s middags) staan wij ten noorden van de poolcirkel.

Well worth a visit, the Arcticum, with expositions on life in Northern Finland, the Northern Light, the Eco system of the Arctic and the results of pollution and climate change.

After the Arcticum we took a bus to the other ‘must’ for Rovaniemi visitors, Santa Claus Village. I used to think Santa lived on the actual North Pole, bu maybe he has moved because the icecap is melting.
Anyway, Santa business seems to be booming as it was a much bigger set up than I remembered from my previous visit here in 1994.

Of course we had to have a quiet get together with Santa so we could inform him which of our friends and relatives deserve presents this year.
