Over Straatsburg kan nog veel gezegd worden.
Binnenkort hebben we Europese verkiezingen – wel gaan stemmen hoor! Zoals een Duitse fietser die we tegenkwamen tegen ons zei: Es lebe Europa!!
Goed, Straatsburg – zetel van het EU parlement. Niet Brussel, want de Fransen moesten natuurlijk ook een belangrijk Europees instituut in Frankrijk hebben. Jammer dat Brussel natuurlijk ook vergaderplaats moet zijn omdat de grote EU instituten daar nu eenmaal zitten. En verder nog een beetje Luxemburg. Zo zien die EU parlementariers nog eens iets van de wereld, en niet op de fiets zoals wij.
In Straatsburg zetelt ook de Raad van Europa (Council of Europe), en natuurlijk het Europees Hof voor de Rechten van de Mens. Wiki weet er alles van: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raad_van_Europa

Maar dat is niet de reden dat we even teruggaan naar Straatsburg. Kijk eens naar de foto hierboven, genomen op de fiets- en voetgangersbrug tussen Straatsburg en Kehl, al die hangsloten.

Verliefde stelletjes hangen ze daar, zweren elkaar eeuwig trouw en gooien de sleutels in het water. De hype is begonnen in Italië waar ze zeggen dat sommige bruggen zuchten onder het gewicht van de hangsloten. Goeie business voor de slotenfabrikanten.

Strassbourg Revisited
This month we will have the EU Parliamentarian Elections – a good time for European citizens to express their opinion that the EU is of the utmost importance, both for maintaining peace and prosperity for all the citizens of Europe.
Strassbourg, seat of the European Parliament, after all, the French had to have an important European institution within their borders as well. Of course the Parliament has to have its meetings in Brussels as well, and don’t forget Luxembourg. A travelling circus spending a tidy sum of money on travel expenses and doubling of tripling facilities.
And then of course Strassbourg is the seat of the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human rights.

All this was not the reason to come back to Strassbourg, just have a look at the picture of all the padlocks above, taken on the pedestrian en cyclists’ bridge between Strassbourg and Kehl. Head over heels in love, couples attach these locks with their names inscribed on them to the bridge to symbolize their love, promise each other their love is for ever and ever and throw the keys into the water.
