We ontmoetten Theo op weg naar Santiago. Aangezien onze fiets snelheden aardig overeenkwamen, kwamen we elkaar nogal eens tegen, fietsten een eindje op, zaten op een terrasje in de warme Spaanse zon, en namen dan weer afscheid. Aangekomen in Santiago de Compostela kwamen we hem voor de laatste keer tegen, op een terrasje ergens in de stad, met zijn hele familie. Daarna volgde een uitnodiging voor een feestje in Beuningen ter gelegenheid van zijn goed volbrengen van de tocht, waar we natuurlijk naar toe gingen.

Toen bekend werd dat wij langs Nijmegen zouden komen volgde er meteen een uitnodiging om langs te komen, en als dat goed uitkwam te overnachten, en even bij te praten. 5 km voor Beuningen, we hadden er toen 106 km opzitten vanaf Hellendoorn, stond Theo ons op te wachten met zijn fiets, en we reden de laatste kilometers samen naar hun huis. Wat een fantastisch leuke ontmoeting weer na zoveel hjaren, en zoveel bij te praten – Theo en Marian, bedankt.

Van Helendoorn ging het door de bossen naar Holten, met de eerste gelegenheid om wat hellinkjes te proberen. Prachtige route, en prachtig weer. Van Holten naar Deventer, lange rechte, ietwat saaie weg, maar wel even lekker opschieten. Deventer > Zutphen. In Zutphen (50 km) reden we de oude binnenstad door en vonden we een geweldig terras om een broodje te eten.

In Zutphen wees iemand on de touristische route over de IJsseldijk naar Arnhem – toen we zagen dat dat 10 tot 15 km om was hebben we toch de directe weg maar gekozen. Met nog steeds mooi weer naar Arnhem, waar we in het Grand Café bij Musis Sacrem van koffie, een wit wijntje en bitterballen genoten. En toen de laatste kiolometers naar Beuningen.

We met Theo in Spain on our trip to Santiago de Compostela. As our cycling speeds more or less matched we kept running into him on the way, either cycling part of the way together or having a beer on a terrace in the warm Spanish sun. The last time we met Theo was in Santiago de Compostela, where we saw hin on a terrace with his family who had come to meet him at the end of the trip in Santiago. And then we got this invitation to a welcome home party in Beuningen which we went to of course.

When they heard that our trip to Rome would take us to Nijmegen, we got an invitation to stop at their place and if it would come in useful, spend the night there – which we did. It was great to meet again after so many years. We had a wonderful meal together, warm showers and a good night’s rest – and I am typing this after breakfast. Thank you, Theo and Marian, for your great hospitality.

Hellendoorn to Holten  took us through the woods with the first opportunity to try out a few slopes, climbs of just some thirty meters or so, but with the Alps and the mountains in Italy every bit of exercise is welcome. From Holten to Deventer was a long straight cycletrack along the mainroad, good to make some speed.

From Deventer we cycled to Zutphen. We cycled through the quaint streets of the old town and had lunch in the garden of a wonderful restaurant.

From Zutphen to Arnhem, where we had coffee, a glass of wine and some snacks, and saw the weather change. The sky got black and there were some thunderclaps, but fortunatey no rain. As we crossed the River Rhine (which will be with us for a long time to come on this trip) for the first time, and the weather improved.

5 kms before we gor to Beuningen we met Theo waiting there for us on his bicycle, so finding the way to their home turned out to be rather simple.
